The aftermath of the Gorkhaland movement of 2007-10 had left its mark on the hills of Darjeeling. The entire region experienced socio-economic and political vulnerability. Unemployment was on the rise and some resorted to amoral ways of earning and anti-social activities. It was one of the most challenging chapters of the ‘hills’. But, Darjeeling endured; stability was slowly but surely returning.

Amidst these trying times, on 27th February, 2010 an active league of dedicated youths from different parts of Darjeeling district headed by Mr. Siddhartha Thami, started their collective journey by rendering selfless service to the society.

Formerly known as the “PEOPLE’S UNITED SOCIAL& AWARENESS FORUM”, the organisation successfully operated for two years, seven months and twenty-one days and finally on the 18th day ofOctober, 2012 the organization was registered under West Bengal SocietyRegistration Act XXVI of 1961 with the name “PEOPLE’S UNITED SOCIAL AWARENESSSOCIETY” & its Legacy Registration No. S/1L/97418. Later on dated 22ndAugust 2019 the certificate was digitalized with the Registration No. SO197418.The organization is also affiliated to Nehru Yuva Kendra, Darjeeling with NYKCode: 6204 & Affiliated No. NYK/DJ/YCA/0716 on dated 29th March2017.  With the ever-growing populationand rapidly increasing reach of the youth development programmes,non-governmental non-profit organisations have standardized the programmes andapproaches to quantitative research data as evaluative markers instead ofrelying on personalised results relevant to each young person who participatesin these programmes. There are programmes that focus solely on reducing orprevention of problem behaviours relevant among the youth. Young people aretreated merely as problems-in-the-making or as current problems. Children andyouth are not acknowledged as creative, striving beings with the capacity tochange the world who are seeking a helping hand.

People’s United Social Awareness Society aims to bring about a change in these prevalent practices. The organisation works hand in hand with various government departments notonly to spread awareness but also to enable youths to attain maximum potentialon a social as well as personal level. Through sporting, co-curricular andsocial awareness activities, we strive to recognise and inculcate creative, productive and positive attributes among the youth
